International Forum on the future of work: Reimagining youth skills post-pandemic

 This is a goal of the International Forum “The future of work in the context of Covid -19 and IR4.0 developing core skills for Vietnam Youth” co-chaired by the Ministry of Labour – Invalids and Social Affairs and Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Forum was held on July 14th, 2021, on the occasion of the anniversary of World’s Youth Skills Day (July 15th). Deputy Minister of Labour – Invalids and Social Affairs Le Tan Dung and Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Nguyen Minh Vu co-chaired the Forum.

In response to World Youth Skills Day,  Ministry of Labour - Invalids and Social Affairs and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, in collaboration with international organizations, held an international forum on the future of employment in the context of Covid-19 pandemic and the fourth industrial revolution 4.0.
Addressing the Forum, Deputy Minister Le Tan Dung said that the Strategy of socio-economic development in Vietnam in 2021 – 2030 has defined clearly the orientation of socio-economic development for 10 years coming: Striving to 2030, Vietnam becomes a developing country with modern industry, high middle income and by 2045, Vietnam become a developed country with high income. Continuing to comprehensively develop and improve the quality of human resources, especially high-quality human resources which is one of the three strategic breakthroughs.
Therefore, to maintain and increase economic growth, Vietnam should push up the development of labour productivity and consider this issue as a key economic lever, the key factor in forming a national competitive advantage. Improving labour productivity in the forthcoming time should be based on the factors of creation, innovation, science progress application, new technology. To meet the requirement of innovation and creation, we should pay attention to the development of human resources in general, and the development of skills for labour, young labour in particular.
Deputy Minister Le Tan Dung emphasized that youth should be specially paid attention to and developed to improve their skills. Thus, Vietnam’s Government defines that develop skills and create jobs for youth in the context of Covid-19 and IR4.0 is a special concern.
The world including Vietnam has faced many challenges. Covid-19 pandemic, aging population, climate changes, the rapidly changing world of work caused by the development of IR 4.0 … The challenges have also brought the advantage for the countries having effective and timely measures.
It can be seen that vocational skills and the improvement of vocational skills are very important for workers, especially the young generation in the context of the industrial revolution 4.0 and international integration. That requires Vietnam to have necessary and comprehensive policies on improving labour skills and future employment for young workers; develop digital skills, basic skills and foundation to help young workers be able to learn and adapt in the post-Covid-19 digital era.
Accordingly, it is essential to promote the skills and practice capacity of Vietnamese workers towards standardization and formation of a workforce with high specialization, professionalism, flexible adaptation and creativity. In addition, the relevant agencies should pay much attention to developing the vocational training system in an open, flexible, modern and interconnected manner, especially high-quality and key vocational colleges and educational and training facilities that meet the demand of learning.
At the Forum, the Directorate of Vocational Education also announced 10 Vietnamese Ambassadors of Vocational Skills 2021 for a three-year tenure.
They include Truong The Dieu, Dang Quang Phong, Thi Quoc Vinh, Nhu Thi Phuong, Phan Van Quoc and Nguyen Thai Phuong.
Cao Van Minh, Nguyen Duc Loi, Nguyen Thi Huyen Trang and Nguyen Thi Doan also make their names onto the list.
All of them obtained awards at international vocational contests, won bronze medals or more prestigious ones at the competitions in ASEAN, and clinched certificates proving their outstanding skills at contests of regional and international level.
So far, Vietnam has a total of 20 ambassadors of vocational skills. The appointment of ambassadors aims to honor young workers with high vocational skills, attract more outstanding individuals in the field and encourage lifelong learning.
