Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen cordial welcomed the Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations

On the morning of March 31, 2014, at the MOLISA Headquarters, Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen had a cordial meeting with Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), concurrently the Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka. Attended the meeting with the Minister were leaders of the Department of International Cooperation, the Department of Gender Equality, the Institute of Labour Science and Social Affairs. On the side of the UN WOMEN, there was Director of Program Division at UN Women, Mrs. Gulden Turkoz-Coslett, UN Women Country Representative in Viet Nam, Ms. Shoko Ishikawa.


     At the meeting, the Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen highly appreciated the support and efficacy technical collaboration of the UN for Gender Equality and the Empowerment of Women for Vietnam.
 
     Sharing on the implementation of gender equality in Vietnam nowadays, the Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen happily said, Vietnam has been actively fulfilled the framework law on gender equality, such as to issue and develop the implementation of the Law on Gender Equality and the Law on family Violence Prevention, the National Strategy on Gender Equality for the period 2011-2020.vv... Specifically, 2013 marked an important event of the country when the new Constitution amendment is adopted, which further confirmed: "Citizen men and women are equal in all respects" and the Constitution states that "the State shall adopt policies to ensure equal rights & opportunity on gender equality", "prohibits the discrimination of gender".
 
     However, besides these achievements, the Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen also raised a number of difficulties and challenges that Vietnam should focus to resolve, such as: violence against women and girls still happen, the indicator of gender disparity at birth continues to rise; the gender gap in earnings is not significantly improved; to developing the regulations of mainstreaming for gender equality in setting up legal documents is coping with difficulties, in fact etc.
 
     On this occasion, the Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen suggested Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka with the role of Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN), concurrently the Executive Director of the UN Women shall direct the concerned UN agencies: Continue to support Vietnam Men as a member of the UN Human Rights Council in the 2014-2016 tenure; Support Vietnam to well preparation for the protection of the 7th and 8th CEDAW Report in July, 2015; Support  Vietnam in international, multilateral and areas forums such as APEC, ASEM ASEAM; technical support and financial resources for Vietnam to promote and ensure better implementation of the international commitments on the rights of vulnerable groups, including the rights of women and girls.

     After hearing the opinion of the Minister Pham Thi Hai Chuyen, the Executive Director of UN Women, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka congratulated the achievements of Vietnam in general and MOLISA in particular has been achieved in the implementation of gender equality as well as the Vietnam elected to UN Human Rights Council for the term of 2014 – 2016. Ms Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuk expressed the desire to MOLISA will have many activities to prepare for the review Beijing + 20 in 2015. This will be an opportunity for Vietnam to show the world the progress on the implementation of gender equality.
 
     Related to the issue that the Minister has suggested, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuk committed to actively support Vietnam in terms of technical and financial in possible conditions. On this occasion, Ms. Phumzile Mlambo-Ngcuka also pleased to announce, currently UN WOMEN is supporting Vietnam to pilot the program "safety school and the role of youth in the prevention of violence against women and girl children". This model is effectively promoted and should be replicated in all schools.
