Minister Dao Ngoc Dung receives United States’ Ambassador to Vietnam


On September 13th, 2019, at the Ministry’s Head office, Minister Dao Ngoc Dung had a cordial meeting with Mr. Daniel J. Kristenbrink, US. Ambassador to Vietnam. Attending the meeting were Leaders from Department of International Cooperation, Department of Legal Affairs, Department of Labour Relationship and Wage. At the meeting, the two sides shared a number of issues relating to content of draft of Labour Code (amended) towards ensuring the harmonious, stable development and approaching the common trend and international standards.

Thank for the warm welcome of Minister Dao Ngoc Dung, Mr. Daniel J. Kristenbrink highly appreciated the developed cooperation between Vietnam and United States which relates to various fields such as economy, trade, social security, and climate change, labour issues. The Ambassador said that the US appreciated the cooperation of MOLISA for the past time and hoped that in the coming time, the US would have more chance to cooperate with MOLISA in the field of labour.

At the meeting, Minister Dao Ngoc Dung highlighted the good cooperation between the two countries in general and between US’s Embassy and MOLISA in particular. The Minister said that the cooperation between the two sides on labour and social security has been go into depth. The Minister thanked US’s Embassy to Vietnam for helping Vietnamese students and labours having chances to study and work in US. These students and labours who have completed their courses in US and returned home country will be the resource for enhancing to development of Vietnam.
Sharing the brief information on the work of building draft of Labour Code (amended) and the process of ratifying the international Conventions on labour of ILO in the coming time, Minister Dao Ngoc Dung announced that, Vietnam concerned to the tools relating to the frame of labour relationship, one of the important factors to improve the development of the commercial relationship between Vietnam and US. Currently, Vietnam has participated in 24 international Convention, especially, in 2019, Vietnam ratified 3 conventions of ILO, including: Convention No. 88 on Organizing employment service; Convention No. 159 on Vocational Rehabilitation and Employment for Disabled people; and Convention No.98 on Right to organize and Collective Bargaining and the total basic Conventions which Vietnam ratified increases to 6/8 Convention.
Minister Dao Ngoc Dung emphasized that, if the draft of Labour Code (amended) passed by the National Assembly in October 2019, the Labour Code will mark a long step in Vietnam's labour history in particular and in the development of law in general. The objective is to develop a Labour Code for benefit of workers, besides ensuring a synchronized, harmonious development without interference.
Thanks to the Minister's sharing, Mr. Daniel J. Kristenbrink said that Vietnam has been developing increasing integrated and approaching the progress of the world. He hoped the draft Labour Code (amended) will be adopted soon and he will follow the next progress of Vietnam's ratification of international conventions.
At the end of the meeting, the Minister thanked the Ambassador's interest in the development of the Vietnamese workforce and the US Embassy's comments on the revision of the Labour Code. The Minister informed that in the past time, together with the comments from domestic and foreign organizations, associations, investors, people through the press and social organizations, the Ministry drafted Labour Code (amended) has received a huge number of comments. The Minister said that the draft Labour Code (amended) aims to ensure the harmonious and stable development, access to the common trend and international standards. The Minister hopes that the Ambassador will contribute ideas to solve the multi-dimensional issues of the labour field.
